Relieve
El relieve del estado está comprendido, dependiendo de su altura sobre el nivel del mar en cuatro zonas: Montañas, Colinas, Llanos altos y Llanos bajos.
Entre las montañas mencionaremos los páramos de Calderas con 3900 m.; Don Pedro, con 3790 m. y de Bartolo, con 3430 m.; Guirigay con 3860 m. y el Pico de Masparro con sus 3370 m.
Las colinas o piedemonte, es la zona más fértil del estado y donde reside la mayoría de la población. Debido a la inclinación donde están situadas, estas tierras nunca llegan a anegarse cuando las crecidas de los ríos y por lo tanto son más aptas para la agricultura.

Los llanos altos, están situados a una altura no mayor de 200 m. y tienen la ventaja de que no se abniegan sino en épocas de pluviosidad muy alta. En esta parte se encuentra la selva maderable, uno de los recursos económicos importantes del estado. Esta zona es apta para la agricultura y la ganadería.
Los llanos bajos están ubicados a menos de 100 m., por lo que pasan la mayor parte del año bajo las aguas de los ríos que abundan en la región.

Todos los ríos del estado vierten sus aguas al océano Atlántico a través del río Apure, que a su vez lo hace en el Orinoco.

Sus principales ríos son:
· El Apure que lo separa del estado de mismo nombre por el sur y que nace de la confluencia de los ríos Uribante y Caparo.
· El Santo Domingo, que recorre 220 km. y nace en la laguna de Mucubají, en el Páramo de Mucuchíes y desemboca sus aguas en el río Apure.
· El Masparro, que nace en el Páramo de Calderas y que luego de recorrer 190 km. vierte sus aguas en el Apure.
· El Boconó, con 182 km. nace en el estado Trujillo y desemboca en el Apure.
· El Canaguá, con 217 km.,que también nace en Los Andes y desemboca en el Apure. De iguales características es el Pagüey con sus 194 km.

Siendo el estado Barinas esencialmente llanero, su Vegetación, Flora y Fauna, corresponde a la descrita en el capítulo Los Llanos, salvo la parte correspondiente a las montañas y el piedemonte cordilleranos, que corresponden a Los Andes.

Actividades Económicas

En lo que respecta a la silvicultura, es gran productor de madera en rola por la variedad de árboles de sus bosques, como caoba, pardillo, mijao, saquisaqui, araguaney, etc.
El petróleo producido en el campo de San Silvestre es conducido por un oleoducto hasta Puerto Cabello a 340 km.
Las industrias de la zona, son las derivadas de sus actividades agro pecuarias: Quesos y leche; curtiembres, cueros y pieles. Los aserradores, elaboran gran parte de la masera producida en sus bosques.
La pesca es la normal de los ríos de los llanos, bagres, cachama y rayados, y en el valle de Santo Domingo, se pescan truchas.
